What Organizations Can Learn About—and from—COVID-19

The outbreak of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 has sent shockwaves around the globe in terms of how people live, work, travel, and learn. Amid such disruption, there is a great need to learn about—and from—this disease. In response, we developed a COVID-19 education module, which we are releasing free of charge to any organization that wishes to use it. The purpose is to educate, separate facts from misconceptions, and help organizations keep people safe.

Crises have been described as having two components. One is danger—the risk of facing an escalating problem or even a catastrophe. The other is opportunity—the lessons and solutions that can and will emerge.

COVID-19 is a global health crisis, now pandemic—the first for a disease caused by a coronavirus. Governments, healthcare institutions, and organizations are responding to reduce the risk of contagion and help keep people safe and healthy. Amid fear and uncertainty, there is a great need for facts and clarity around what we know about the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19, from how it is transmitted to symptoms and populations at greatest risk.

 

Promoting Education about COVID-19

To promote greater understanding, Area9 Lyceum has developed an adaptive learning module on COVID-19. Along with our course for medical professionals, we are making this new adaptive learning module available free of charge to any organization that wishes to use it.

At a time when COVID-19 responses must be grounded in facts, not fears, we believe such education is crucial. Providing the latest information and insights about the disease is also in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals—in particular, Goal No. 3 of the UN SDGs, which seeks to improve good health and well-being and calls for more efforts to eradicate a wide range of diseases and address emerging health issues.

 

A Changing Landscape

Across the organizational landscape, changes are occurring rapidly as part of the COVID-19 response. Large cities and even entire countries are on lockdown. Such steps are being taken to prevent the risk of infection, particularly for higher-risk individuals.

There are other changes being implemented by organizations, including universities and corporations. Companies around the globe are allowing, encouraging, and even mandating remote working—among them Apple and several other technology companies. In addition, organizations are also implementing more remote learning, putting education and training online where it may very well be accessed by employees who are working from home.

Such changes are aimed at supporting “social distancing” to reduce the risk of contagion and “flattening the curve” that has marked the exponential spread of the disease to date. Learning goes hand-in-hand with prevention efforts, in support of workplace policies around remote working and learning. Through it all, the lessons learned will remain, long after this health crisis has peaked and passed.

Amid uncertainty and crisis management, it takes foresighted leadership to respond in the moment and navigate toward a more stable future. By providing access to learning resources such as the COVID-19 learning module, leaders help ensure that the experiences of today will inform better response and preparedness—as well as opportunities for the future.
